A Heartfelt Note on Burnout and Self-Care in Nursing

Burnout is real in healthcare, and many nurses experience it quietly while continuing to care for everyone else first. During COVID, I reached a point of deep exhaustion myself. Working in the ICU, I saw death, grief, and trauma every day. The emotional weight, constant risk, and uncertainty eventually caught up with me. I realized I wasn’t just tired, I was burnt out. I reached a point where I needed time away to heal, so I took time off between travel assignments. Therapy also became an important part of my recovery, helping me process what I had experienced and rebuild emotional resilience.
It’s important to say this clearly: it’s okay to step back when you need to. It doesn’t make you weak, uncommitted, or less of a nurse. It means you’re human. We encourage our patients to care for their mental health, yet we often forget we deserve the same compassion. You truly can’t pour from an empty glass.
Today, I focus intentionally on self-care. I work out to release stress and rebuild my energy. I meditate to calm my mind and reset after demanding shifts. I go hiking to reconnect with nature and breathe away the noise. I make time for what matters most, spending time with family, loved ones, and pets, because connection is healing. And I still enjoy simple joys like coffee tasting, taking moments to slow down and be present. These small rituals help keep me grounded and emotionally centered.
If you’re feeling stretched thin, you’re not alone, and you don’t have to push through forever. Rest is not quitting. Resetting is not failure. Seeking support is strength. Caring for yourself is part of sustaining a long, meaningful career in nursing.
